Silver: Pete Capella nailed the dorky/naive/earnest nature of the character, I can't imagine anyone else voicing him. Haven't heard her in half a minute, did she retire? Rouge: I was really saddened to hear Karen Strassman's views (as she did an amazing job in so many games I enjoyed), so I enjoy Lani Minella doing the role, but then again I enjoy Lani Minella whenever she's in a game. Shadow: Similar to Sonic, I could never stand Jason Griffith, as he could only do three voices-David Humphrey's "cool edgy" voice always felt natural (for lack of a better word) to me. Thank god Mike Pollock (who is in fact a national treasure) is usually down to voice the role. Knuckles: Travis Willingham did a real fine job, but there's no competing with Dan Fucking Green.Įggman: I loved Deem Bristow's performances, but his passing was a shame. Tails: Kate Higgins or Colleen O'Shaughnessey were fine-anybody but an actual kid please.Īmy: Cindy Robbinson was great, but Lisa Ortiz is GOAT.
Smith, but Ryan Drummond always felt the most natural doing a "young voice." Jason Griffith never improved to the point were I could enjoy him. My preferences were mixed throughout the ages. He's genuinely good at this, he's just got bad material, and in the one (singular) moment he was asked to do something dramatic in all the games he voiced in it totally bombed, because they were coming out of a character who won't stop sounding like Poochie. Roger Craig Smith is great at selling the irreverently snarky mascot with 'tude that Sonic never canonically was but we just decided he had to be come 2010, and he really only got to flex his muscles in the Boom cartoon because that show was all irreverent jokes, so it played to his strengths. In that particular context I actually think Griffith's the best one.
He didn't have that tinge of impish trickster that Drummond nailed in SA2 and maybe went overboard with come Heroes, but those games were mostly about Sonic as more of a calm dude who vibed through life and was pretty good at talking about feelings, and since two of those games involved Sonic getting thrown into a magical fantasy world he does a good job at selling the idea of Sonic in an unfamiliar setting with no friends, so he's pointed and snarky with most of the one-off cast members but maintains a lot of gentle, knowing kindness in the endings when he has to play emotional support. Griffith did a pretty good job at this too come Secret Rings through Black Knight. Ryan Drummond's my Sonic voice because Sonic the Hedgehog is shonen anime and therefore when he's voiced in that iconic "early 00s English dub loaded with enthusiasm" way to sell the cool-headed wanderer, that's my jam.
